Older undergraduate changes from interior design to IT

Charlotte Pendred was a client who had been travelling to try and ‘find out what she wanted to do career wise’. Unsurprisingly when she returned to the UK she found herself no further forward. Charlotte enrolled in our career assessment programme and accepted the challenge to do some deep thinking about where her key skills lay and what she really enjoyed doing. Our initial conclusion was that she should ‘test the water’ by taking an evening course in IT. This allowed her to gain experience and assess career options in a 'no pressure' environment. Armed with her new knowledge, we were then able to guide her successfully through the recruitment process. The company she chose to join was impressed that she had sought professional help to change career, and recognised the evening course as a clear indication of her level of commitment. From the company's point of view these factors significantly reduced the risk of hiring her into an IT role. By the end of her work with us Charlotte could clearly articulate why she wanted to move into IT, and what evidence she had to prove she would be successful in this new field. Her experiences were published in a feature article in the Guardian newspaper, which you can read via the link below.

London Business School alumnus moves from investment banking to industry

Having worked in investment banking after his MBA at London Business School, Gabriel Chan wanted to move back into industry. He needed help in presenting his skills in a way that would make him attractive to the CEOs of small to medium sized chemical companies. He also wanted some direction on how to deal with head-hunters, and how to make direct approaches to the companies with which he wanted to work. We conducted a number of mock 'competency based' interviews, enabling Gabriel to practice verbalising how he could make a significant contribution to the companies he was approaching. The strategy we helped him devise for direct approaches to his target companies resulted in several interviews. For such an important move, Gabriel was rightly careful to analyse any role he was offered against clearly defined criteria (developed through the Workmaze process). Finally he accepted an exciting role secured through a head-hunter. Again, we were able to work with him to negotiate both his renumeration and a flexible working contract - enabling him to pursue another life-long goal.
