How To Get The Job You Want

A clear understanding of what you bring to an employer is crucial in today's job market. With less employer based job security and people wanting to find increasing fulfillment through work, we believe it's important to take charge of your own career direction. In addition, a candidate who can demonstrate what they offer and where they want to head professionally is stronger at interview than someone who has not taken the time to do this groundwork. This workshop provides participants with a structure and a systematic approach to career planning. It also gets them to consider how to market themselves and practise networking for career development.

Who?

Jane Barrett is the founder of Workmaze Ltd and has a background in recruitment, having worked for executive head-hunters for five years before moving in-house as a recruitment manager for PricewaterhouseCoopers. She then set up Workmaze Ltd and has since helped hundreds of people develop their careers. She is a qualified CCS counsellor and is qualified to administer Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality inventory. She regularly works with the UK's leading business schools running career development workshops and conducting competency- based interview practise. Jane also has a private career coaching practice where she regularly works with business school alumni.

What?

We will cover the following three topics over a period of two hours:

  • Career assessment process
  • What recruiters want
  • How to get interviews

The workshop draws on Jane's experience both as a recruiter and as a career coach, with insights and examples. There will be two exercises in the workshop. A networking exercise to help students start to gain confidence and understand the value of networking and a small group exercise concentrating on developing a 'what I have to offer' proposition.

Outcome

Students have a clear process to work though - enabling them to consider their career. They have the view point of an 'in-house' MBA recruiter and a search and selection consultant. There is an opportunity to practise networking and marketing themselves in a safe environment.

Logistics:

The workshop has a strict maximum capacity of 40, due to the logistics of the exercises. If possible the room should be one where there is some space where the students can comfortably move around. We actively encourage schools to invite part-time, MSc or EMBA students as the workshop can be adapted to include them and provides great networking opportunities. We are pleased to offer the workshop in the evening or at the weekend if required, and suggest it should be offered as early in the first term as possible.

The workshop is supported by our Workmaze MBA Career Development Workbook; this includes the content from the workshop and research resources. We recommend the workbook exercises are completed before the workshop but this is not compulsory. Workbooks are available to download from the 'business school member login' area of our web site, or hard copies can be purchased at an additional cost.
